Acupuncture involves placing fine needles into the body at very specific points. It is known to have a calming effect on your nervous system and stimulates the production of brain chemicals such as serotonin, which promotes sleep. In addition, acupressure involves using the pressure of fingers on the same body points as acupuncture for a similar effect. Acupressure can be performed on yourself, so it has obvious advantages.
It's really anyone's guess as to the effectivenenss of acapuncture as a treatment for insomnia, but some people swear by it. A good friend of mine is a successful acupuncturist and the use of his specialty as an insomnia cure or treatment was news to him. That leaves me thinking that it's not a commonly useful treatment.
