Benzodiazepines

Benzodiazepines ("Benzos")are the oldest class (sedative hypnotics) of prescription sleep medications-drugs that are still commonly in use, although not as common. Brand names include Dalmane, ProSom, Doral, Restoril, and Halcion. Benzodiazepines as a group, are considered to have a higher risk of dependency than other insomnia sedative hypnotics such as Non-Benzodiazepines. Both are classified as controlled substances, although more current formulations of the drugs have attempted to lessen the side-effect. These drugs are now less frequently prescribed than other drugs such as Ambien CR and Lunesta, which are non-benzodiazepines.

Common side-effects include: dizziness, drowsiness, lack of muscular coordination, and light-headedness. The most common complaint of these class of drugs is that they make you groggy. These are serious drugs so doctor supervision is essential.
