Dalmane (Flurazepam) is the brand name for a prescription sleeping pill. It is in a class of sedative hypnotics called Benzodiazepines. They are the oldest class of sleep medications/drugs that are still commonly in use. Dalmane, and Benzodiazepines as a group, are considered to have a higher risk of dependency than other insomnia sedative hypnotics such as Non-Benzodiazepines. Both are classified as controlled substances, although more current formulations of the drugs have attempted to lessen the side-effect. These drugs, including Dalmane, are now less frequently prescribed than other drugs such as Ambien CR and Lunesta, which are non-benzodiazepines.
Common side-effects include: dizziness, drowsiness, lack of muscular coordination, and light-headedness. This is serious stuff so medical supervision is essential.
