Non-benzodiazepine hypnotic sleep aid drugs include zolpidem (Ambien), zaleplon (Sonata), and eszopiclone (Lunesta). They are now recommended as the first-choice drugs for short-term insomnia. These newer medications have a different chemical structure than benzodiazepines, and act more specifically on the area of the brain that is meant to be affected by the drug. This, they think, creates fewer side-effects and less risk of chemical dependency. They are still considered controlled substances though. These medicines can also cause a serious allergic reaction called anaphylaxis.
By most accounts these drugs still create a strong narcotic reaction in people with the most common side-effect being grogginess upon waking. Definately seek professional medical advice before taking these products. They should be used as a last resort to deal with insomnia and sleeping problems.
