Ramelteon (brand name is Rozerem) is a prescription oral sleep aid drug that is used for treating insomnia. Ramelteon is used for sleep onset problems and is not effective for problems with staying asleep. It acts by stimulating receptors for melatonin in the brain. Melatonin controls the circadian rhythms of the body which, in turn, controls the sleep and wake cycle. Ramelteon is not addictive like many other prescription sleep aids, and it has not been labeled a controlled substance by the FDA. Ramelteon does not cause withdrawals or rebound insomnia when it's use is stopped. Ramelteon was approved by the FDA in 1995.
