Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a perennial flowering plant, with sweet scented pink and white flowers. The flowers bloom in the northern hemisphere of Europe and North America from June to September. Valerian has been used as a medicinal herb since at least the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans. It is native to both Europe and North America, and has been used in many cultures around the world as a mild sedative and sleep aid. During World War II, English citizens received prescriptions for valerian root to help them endure the air raids.
Valerian is used to combat sleep disorders, restlessness, anxiety, and as a muscle relaxant. It is thought to work best when taken over longer periods, though its short-term use is common. Valerian root is not as potent a sleep herb as others, including prescription medications, but it does have less side-effect.
